LGBTQ+ Pride Month

Knowledge gaps have been reported among oncologists relating to the increased cancer risk factors affecting the LGBTQ+ community. Learn more about LGBTQ+ cancer facts for lesbian and bisexual women or gay and bisexual men and the challenges LGBTQ+ cancer survivors face.

June is Pride Month. Gay pride or LGBT pride is the promotion of the self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and increased visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people as valued members of our community.

  • Despite great progress in the prevention, early detection and treatment of cancer, significant disparities in cancer incidence and mortality rates still exist across diverse populations. Ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity to live a healthy life, prevent cancer, find it early, and receive high quality treatment and support when they need it, is the foundation of the American Cancer Society’s work.
  • Research confirms that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people have a disproportionate burden of cancer and distinctive risk factors, and that they face additional barriers to accessing health care. They therefore have both greater cancer incidence and later stage diagnosis.
