Cancer Screen Week, December 7-11,
is a public health initiative to increase awareness around the potentially
lifesaving benefits of screening for breast, cervical, colorectal, lung and
other cancers.
We all can make
an impact in reducing cancer mortality for some of the most common and deadly
cancers in the United States. That’s why each of us must do all we can to
promote the power of cancer screenings, and Cancer Screen Week is the catalyst
for action.
Did
You Know?
·
Screening for people who are 55-74 years old with certain risk
factors has shown to reduce mortality from lung cancer.
·
Only 39% of colorectal cancer cases are diagnosed at the
local stage, when the 5-year survival rate is 90%.
·
The best way to spot skin cancer early is to be aware of
any areas that are new or changing in size, shape, or color.
·
Approximately 62% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed
at the local stage, when the 5-year survival rate is 99%.
· Despite the longstanding ability to detect cervical cancer early through screening, less than half (44%) of all cervical cancer cases are diagnosed at the local stage, when the 5-year survival rate is 92%.
· Regular screening with a mammogram can often find or detect breast cancer early when its small and even before a lump can be felt. This is when its easiest to treat.
