In a post on Twitter today, our Deputy Chief Medical Officer Len Lichtenfeld, MD, warns the public against using UV rays to protect themselves from COVID-19, or as a means of treating the virus.
He said there is absolutely no evidence that it works, but there is plenty of evidence that UV rays, from the sun and tanning beds, can lead to skin cancer. "I have had skin cancer; it is nothing to be trifled with," the doctor said.
There have been some reports that ultraviolet rays might be used as a means to clean surfaces and masks - but not the human body.
